At IdiPAZ he has been director of the Clinical and Invasive Cardiology research group and coordinator of the cardiovascular area for the last 10 years. He published his first original article in 1974 and since then his research work has been incessant, with complete dedication to public and academic medicine, resulting in more than 1500 scientific publications (h-Index 83, more than 55,000 citations.
He is considered one of the most relevant researchers in the field of Cardiology. His main lines of research include acute and chronic ischemic heart disease, heart failure, and cardiotoxicity. His research method evolved over the years. Initially his research was local, but he soon realized the essential value of international multidisciplinary groups and basic research. As a result, he has participated in the organization of multiple research projects in collaboration with other institutes, including the Universities of Massachusetts, Upsala, New York, Duke, MacMaster and the Montreal Heart Institute, alternating research, management, organization and supervision positions, which has allowed him to establish national and international relationships at the highest level, as evidenced by his participation in the paradigm shift in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
