He obtained his Medical Degree and PhD from the Autonomous University of Madrid in 2002. He completed his specialization in Medical Oncology at La Paz University Hospital, where he has worked as an oncologist since 1995, and he has been the Head of Section of the Medical Oncology Department since 2014.
He has completed various postgraduate studies at the clinical level (Master`s in Palliative Care and Support Treatment for Cancer Patients, UAM),), in management (Masters in Health Management and Administration, OBS Barcelona), in innovation (Leadership and Innovation Program in the Health Sector, IE Business School), and in
digital transformation (MIT).
In the field of research, his main areas of interest have focused on the molecular biology of lung cancer and other thoracic tumors, as well as the clinical study of new drugs and predictive response factors. As a result, he has published over 200 scientific articles, presented communications at conferences, and led various research projects. He has served as the principal investigator for competitive public and private projects both nationally and internationally over the last 15 years. To date, he has been the principal investigator for 260 clinical trials in the field of thoracic oncology.
Since the establishment of the Hospital La Paz Institute for Health Research (IdiPAZ),he has participated as a researcher and a member of the Scientific Committee. Since 2012, he has also been the coordinator of the Innovation Unit of IdiPAZ within the ITEMAS Platform (Instituto de Salud Carlos III). He is co-principal investigator of the "Experimental Therapies and Biomarkers in Cancer Unit" co-director of the Cancer and Human Genetics Area, and a member of the Board of Trustees and Executive Council of the Institute.
He engages in teaching activities at the Autonomous University of Madrid, where he has been an Associate Professor of Oncology since 2007, and he is co-director of the "Cancer and Innovation Classroom". He has co-edited several oncology books, authored multiple chapters, and, in 2020, he published the popular science book "Cancer:Survival Manual" Currently, he serves as the Vice President of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM).
